Top news stories and rumors of the week

Bermuda's Royal Gazette today reports that one in six businesses in the popular Bermuda port town of St. George's have shut down over the past 18 months as cruise lines have reduced visits. The head of the Chamber of Commerce for Bermuda's East End, Kirby Brackstone, tells the news outlet about a dozen of 70 stores in and around St. George's have disappeared due to the resulting drop in business.
Has the arrival of Royal Caribbean's much-celebrated Oasis of the Seas had an impact on the line's rivals? Not according to Micky Arison, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean's biggest competitor, industry giant Carnival Corp. "We are not seeing any impact from Oasis," Arison told Wall Street analysts today during a conference call to discuss fourth quarter earnings. Carnival is the parent company of two of Royal Caribbean's strongest competitors, Carnival and Princess, as well as more than half a dozen other lines operating around the globe including Cunard, Costa and Holland America.
Royal Caribbean, a line that has built everything from ice skating rinks to surfing pools on its cruise ships, has seriously considered putting a roller coaster on a vessel. That's the word from Norwegian journalist Rune Thomas Ege, who wrote about the topic in a recent issue of VG, Norway's largest print newspaper. Ege's story quotes Royal Caribbean President and CEO Adam Goldstein as saying the line has looked into putting both roller coasters and Ferris wheels on ships.
