August 3, 2009 – Tryin to reason with hurricane season
Before we go any farther, yes, that’s the title to a Jimmy Buffett song. No, I’m not a Parrothead. Yes, I’ve quoted him in my writings before. I just think he has written some very insightful words in his time.
It’s August now. Here on the Gulf Coast, this is when we start taking hurricane season seriously. June & July sometimes give us some storms, but August and September are usually when the real action takes place around here. This past weekend I’ve pulled out my supply tubs and given everything a once-over, double checking to see if there is anything I need, etc. The generator is purring like a kitten (a very loud kitten), lights, candles, batteries, TP, kitchen paper/plastic goods, can opener, you get the idea. 4 cases of bottled water are stashed away, and all I need to do is pick up some canned goods. I need to start stockpiling gasoline as well. I usually keep 20 gallons in the garage in addition to the 7 the generator holds. Why? Gasoline, as well as electricity to pump it, is in short supply and high demand right after a hurricane. Dangerous? Maybe.
It’s hard to believe that IKE passed through here only 11 months ago. (Our Alaska trip was 11 months ago??? Wow!) I took a drive down Bolivar Peninsula this weekend to catch the sunrise. I didn’t get there in time, but I stopped on the sand just down the coast from High Island and enjoyed the view for a bit. Watching the morning sun from a deserted stretch of beach makes me want to go to St. Anywhere. Eleven months later and it is still amazing how things have changed there forever. The destruction is still evident, and many people’s lives will be changed forever. I also thought for a moment of those that didn’t survive…
Well, the CrownCast cruise is only 5 months away! I’m really looking forward to that one. I can’t wait to meet up with everyone. J&V, Bob & Tina, Tess, Grandpa, Alyx and family, whoever else shows up! I wanted to try to get another one in before January (yes, I’m a sick puppy), but it looks like I won’t be doing so. There’s always that lottery…
On a good note, last year at this time, we already had six named storms. Here’s to a quiet season!
“Yes I must confess, I could use some rest…I can’t run at this pace very long. Yes it’s quite insane, I think it hurts my brain…but it cleans me out, then I can go on” …Thanks Jimmy.
